Be Prepared

Our walks take place across a variety of terrain and in all kinds of weather. The advice below is aimed particularly at walking through autumn, winter and into spring, when conditions can change quickly.

Being prepared is one of the simplest ways to make sure you have a safe and enjoyable day.

When packing for a walk, plan for the unexpected. Imagine someone in the group becomes injured or unwell and we are some distance from help. We may need to stop and remain together while assistance is arranged.

Would you have enough clothing and equipment to stay warm, dry and comfortable while we wait?

That’s a useful question to ask yourself before every walk.

Be Prepared for the Weather

The weather might look perfect when you leave home, but thirty minutes into a walk things can be very different. The temperature drops, the rain arrives or the wind picks up, and suddenly that extra layer or waterproof you decided not to pack seems like a very good idea.

Over the years I’ve walked in just about every type of weather and seen plenty of unexpected situations. One thing has remained remarkably consistent: the people who come properly prepared are usually the people who cope best when conditions change.

Remember, these are group walks. We walk together and look after one another, so what you bring isn't just about your own comfort. If someone is cold, wet or struggling because they haven't brought suitable clothing or equipment, it can affect the whole group.

Think of yourself as part of a team. Pack for the conditions you might encounter, not just the conditions you can see when you leave home.

And if you're ever unsure about what to bring, please ask me before the walk. I'd much rather you ask than turn up without something you might need.
